FLORIDA MUSIC AWARDS HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE 2025: SAM MOORE

Sam Moore
Sam Moore is a Florida-born singer and musician. He is widely recognized as one of the vocalists for vocal duos Sam & Dave. According to Rolling Stone magazine, Sam Moore is one of the 100 greatest music artists of the rock era.

Sam Moore was born on 12 October 1935 in Miami, Florida, United States. The information about his early life and education is hardly available in the media.

Sam Moore has always been a music fanatic. At the age of 26, or in 1961, he met Dave Peters in The King of Hearts Club of Miami. The two were signed as a duo by Roulette Records. Having been experienced gospel singers, the two achieved significant success very quickly. In 1964, they signed a contract with Atlantic Records and also did some recordings for Stax Records. Sam and Dave worked together for two decades and officially parted their ways on December 31, 1981. During this time, they produced some billboard hits such as:

  • Hold On! I’m Comin’ (1966)
  • You Got Me Hummin’ (1966)
  • When Something Is Wrong with My Baby (1967)
  • Soul Man (1967)
  • I Thank You (1968)

Although Sam and Dave completely parted in 1980, they had a rough patch in their career in June 1970. That was when Sam began his solo career. However, he hadn’t excelled significantly yet. Breaking up from Dave, Sam went on a tour with several other solo artists in Europe. He married his wife Joyce McRae who helped him overcome his drug addiction problem. After a year, Moore was partly rehabilitated and was largely involved in advocating against drug addiction.

On July 7, 2008, Moore released two-holiday albums named Papa Soul’s Christmas and This Christmas – both labeled by MSH Music. Likewise, on August 29, 2006, Sam released an album titled Overnight Sensational which couldn’t do quite well as expected. Labeled by Rhino Records, the album reached the top position of 90 in US R&B. In 1994, Sam was featured in ‘Rainy Night in Georgia’ by Conway Twitty. The song peaked CAN AC at 33rd position.

Moore joined Bruce Springsteen on his soul cover album for two songs, “Soul Days” and “I Forgot To Be Your Lover.,” in 2021.

On April 25, 2023, Moore joined a large cast of country performers honoring George Jones at the Still Playin’ Possum concert at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville, Alabama, where he sang “The Blues Man”. Sam Moore is married to Joyce McRae since 1982.
